AWS Events
Design system management
Introduction
AWS Events is a conference series focused on cloud computing, and AWS products and services. The largest annual event is re:Invent, with over 50,000 attendees, and other AWS Summits are hosted around the world.
Challenges
I worked on this project from wireframe to release, and I designed elegant ways for attendees to easily:
- Browse and register for sessions
- Participate with interactive live polling
- See the shortest badge pickup lines in real time
- Find transportation - 400 shuttles and 1,800 routes
- Win prizes in session related games
Everything in one place
The AWS Events app serves as a personalized agenda, information center for news and alerts, networking hub with discussions and interactive polls and games. It is also vital for getting around with interactive maps, navigation between venues, and shuttle bus system. All of this is tied together by strong design language and navigation patterns.
Advanced components for a dynamic app
The AWS Events app evolved over time and often required changes that affected hundreds of screens. The component and variable system I built allowed these changes to take minutes instead of hours
Illustration
Custom illustrations and animations I made added character to the app while staying cohesive with the existing design system.
Prototypes for real world testing
The high fidelity prototype I made allowed for multiple rounds of testing at re:Invent and re:Inforce, and lead to changes that directly improved the app’s navigation and usefulness overall

Gamification tailored to event content
AWS wanted a way to engage conference attendees with the content of sessions, and the sponsors of the event. I designed a simple QR code system for a game with prizes that could be adapted by sponsors or session leaders.
Conclusion
AWS Events was a great chance for me to work directly with the client for a long term in-depth project. As Figma evolved I learned the new variable system and how to utilize it to save time in this fast paced workflow that required many sweeping changes. I worked with accessibility experts to ensure everything met WCAG standards, and with developers to make sure everything was feasible and handed off smoothly. Overall this was a great learning experience and I developed my knowledge of design system management and the entire design process.
